The ACLU of Idaho opposes HR 06 because it creates a preference for a majority religion in violation of the long-held principle of religious neutrality by the state. The separation of church and state ensures that all Idahoans have the freedom to decide for ourselves what faith, if any, to follow, without pressure from the government. Religious freedom thrives best when the government stays out of it. However, when the government takes sides on matters of faith, such as the resolution outlined in HR 06, it violates our constitutional commitment to religious neutrality and sends the message that those who follow some religions are favored, and that those don’t are second-class citizens.
