Would you like to learn more about the problems with Real ID and what can be done to change it?

Please join us for a discussion of the facts and problems with the Real ID Act of 2005.

Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at 2:30 p.m.

In the Gold Room, Idaho State Capitol Building, fourth floor

The panelists include:

Jim Harper, Director of Information Policy Studies, CATO Institute

Barry Steinhardt, Director, ACLU Technology and Liberty Program

Bill Bishop, Director, Idaho State Bureau of Homeland Security

Jeremy Meadow, Trade and Transportation Policy Director, National Conference of State Legislatures

The Real ID Act was passed by Congress in May 2005 without a single hearing in the Senate. If it is accepted and carried out by the states, Real ID will turn state drivers’ licenses into national identity cards and impose numerous burdens on taxpayers and state governments. States, including Arizona, Georgia, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah, Vermont, Washington, and Wyoming, are already mobilizing to address the myriad problems presented by Real ID.

What has Idaho done to address the problems with Real ID? On February 8, Representative Phil Hart introduced a memorial in the House of Representatives – Transportation and Defense Committee that would send a message to Congress that Idaho will not take part in the Real ID program unless it is modified to address privacy, fiscal and bureaucratic concerns.  If you would like to listen to public debate on the memorial, or if you would like to testify at the hearing, please come to the House Transportation and Defense Committee meeting on Wednesday, February 14, at 1:30 p.m. in room 412 of the Idaho State Capitol Building.
